FAA grounds Bimini Island Air
By Jerry Limone
July 12, 2011

The FAA has revoked Bimini Island Air’s operating certificate because the Fort Lauderdale-based air taxi allegedly operated scheduled flights to the Bahamas when it wasn't certificated as a scheduled carrier.

The FAA said it issued an emergency order of revocation on June 27 that took effect immediately. Bimini Island Air has appealed the merits of the order with the National Transportation Safety Board.

The FAA alleged that Bimini Island Air advertised and operated 15 scheduled flights between Fort Lauderdale and the Bahamas in March and April 2011, using a 30-seat Saab 340-A twin-turboprop aircraft. The airline is certificated as an on-demand service provider, not a scheduled airline.

Scheduled airlines are governed by rules different from those for charter and on-demand operators, the FAA noted.
