PHILIPSBURG - Good news for Dominicans. Sisserou Airways, a new airline that’s headquartered at the island’s Melville Hall Airport has started operations; flights to and from St. Maarten will be carried out as of this week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, said Dylcia Lake of Juliana Airport Handlers (JAH), the airline’s St. Maarten representative at Princess Juliana International Airport.

The flights will be carried out with a 19-seater Jetstream aircraft which spans the distance between Princess Juliana International and Melville Hall Airports in 45 minutes.

Erwin Ferreira, Sisserou’s Director of Operations said the airline will position itself as Dominica’s main means of air transport, but also aims at the charter business around the Caribbean. “The Jetstream is a pressurized aircraft with a stand-up cabin, perfect for groups of less than 20 people,” he said.

He said the airline’s tickets will be competitive. “And people would want to consider using us for charters. Chartering is convenient, time efficient and generally comes with far less hassle,” he said. “And when you charter, you can dictate whether you want catering or not. This could be the answer for pan Caribbean businesses and family gatherings.”

Sisserou Airline was established to fill the void that existed after TakeAir airline ceased operations last year. “TakeAir’s demise took us all by surprise, even me,” said Ferreira, who also worked for TakeAir. He added: ”People can expect Sisserou to remain in the air for a long time.”

He hinted that the airline’s name was carefully chosen. The Sisserou, one of two parrots that exist nowhere else than Dominica, is the Nature Isle’s national bird. “We want to be Dominica’s national carrier,” he said.

He said that while the company now runs in partnership with Tennessee based Corporate Flight Management (SFM), they intend to own their own aircraft soon. “We want Dominicans to identify us as their main carrier,” he said.

Aside from flights to St. Maarten, Sisserou also carries out flights from Melville Hall to St. Thomas and to Barbados. Ferreira said the objective is to add flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida by January 2009.

Ferreira said the airline will have its official launch in December this year. “But we advanced the start of our operations to facilitate travel to Dominica in for the anniversary of our Independence in November. “We will be there to assist making our grand party a success,” he said.

The airline will start advertising of its services in local newspapers this week. Interested travelers can call Juliana Airport Handlers on 5467620 or visit
