GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The strike by air traffic controllers in Guyana that started on Friday forced the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to shut down its operations on Sunday.

The Kaieteur News reported that, as a result, two Caribbean Airlines flights to Guyana from Trinidad were cancelled, leaving a large number of Guyana-bound passengers stranded in Trinidad.

There was only one person operating the radio, which control traffic between the tower and airplanes traversing Guyana's airspace, but when his shift ended on Sunday evening, there was no replacement.

There is also only one engineer manning the equipment at the airport, which could have catastrophic results in the event of an equipment failure.

All air traffic controllers have been off the job since Friday, having served notice that they were protesting a number of outstanding issues, among which are salary increases for 2008 and outstanding payment of retroactive overtime reimbursements.

The Kaieteur News understands that the control tower is manned by the director and four managers.
The others are on strike.

The controllers have indicated that they are prepared to stay away for as long as it takes to get what they deserve.
