Canjet hijacker appeal thrown out
Friday, July 29, 2011

STEPHEN Fray, the man who hijacked a Canjet aircraft at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, had his appeal thrown out in the Court of Appeal today. Attorney Jacqueline Samuels-Brown had filed an appeal on Fray's behalf citing that her client was schizophrenic and was not in control of his faculties when he hijacked the plane.

But the court did not agree and dismissed the appeal.

Fray was found guilty of eight of 10 charges brought against him, including illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, shooting with intent, robbery with aggravation, and breaches of the Civil Aviation Act in October 2009.

Fray made international headlines in April 2009 when he charged past security at the airport and commandeered the Canada-bound chartered flight, holding 159 passengers and the crew hostage.
He released the passengers after about 10 minutes, but held the crew hostage for about four hours. No one was hurt.
