JCAA apologises for delay in confirming simulation exercise
Tue July 4, 2017

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) says it regrets the delay in confirming the simulation exercise which took place at the Norman Manley International Airport last Friday.

According to the JCAA, its failure to confirm the simulation immediately after the event caused alarm.

The Authority says it conducts scheduled and unscheduled simulation and other surveillance exercises on a monthly basis.

It says these exercises are critical components of Jamaica’s safety and security oversight systems, as they test the readiness to mitigate threats and respond to a variety of emergency situations.

The JCAA says the security simulation exercise at Norman Manley International last Friday was one of a number of activities.

There were scenes of panic at the airport Friday evening as first responders flocked the airport following reports that a bag had exploded.

It was later confirmed to be a simulation exercise.
