[JCAA] Air traffic control services now fully restored island-wide - JCAA
20 September 2017

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) has advised that the country's airspace is again open to 24-hour air traffic control services. The full-scale restoration was achieved at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the JCAA indicated. The return to normalcy came almost two weeks after lightning struck and damaged radar and communication equipment at the agency.

The JCAA, in a statement on Tuesday, said it had informed the various stakeholders of the then pending return to normalcy on Monday night. Indications are that the JCAA still has challenges with some of its other operations, which are not yet fully restored. It is also to fully review the overall impact of the lightning strike.

But with full air traffic control services being its number one priority at present, the agency has been able to adapt to operating on the new air navigational system that was being established at the time of the lightning strike, and continued training of its personnel is still ongoing.
