GOL begins Suriname flight with record low fare

GOL Airlines of Brazil on Tuesday commenced twice-weekly Boeing 737-700 services to Paramaribo, Suriname, by introducing an all time low airfare of US$103 one-way to Belem, Brazil, which is expected to bring stiff competition to the route that was monopolized by Surinam Airways(SLM) for decades.

The one-way airfare, Paramaribo-Belem, on Surinam Airways is US$163. From monitoring GOL's booking site, US$103 one-way from Paramaribo to Belem is just not an introductory price. That fare appears to be standard throughout the year. Further, it seems that there are no high or low season. The fare is the same for the Christmas season as well.

GOL also offers a flexible non-penalty one way from Paramaribo to Belem for US$125 and that includes any changes and cancellations.

With this level of fares, more Surinamese will now travel to Brazil.

GOL is a giant Brazilian company that has a fleet of 130 aircraft and has an order for 140 Boeing 737s. In the Caribbean, GOL flies to Aruba, Barbados, Curacao, the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago.

Besides capitalizing on the large Brazilian community in Suriname and who are looking for more options traveling home to Brazil, GOL will also connect passengers on outgoing KLM flights out of Paramaribo to Holland and Europe. Surinamese will also now have seamless connections from Paramaribo via Belem to GOL's vast domestic network in Brazil.

And with no direct air connection between neighbouring Guyana and Brazil, there are ongoing discussions about GOL soon resuming services to Georgetown, Guyana.
