New Barbados - Brazil service

Unread post by islandflyer » Fri Jan 29, 2010

A NEW BRAZIL-BARBADOS airline service starts in June.

But Barbados is not rushing to have a Chinese flight connection.

Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy made the announcements yesterday, briefing the media at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on last year's performance of the tourism industry and plans for 2010.

He said Government and the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) were looking to attract tourists from Brazil, where the island was setting up an embassy "during the course of this year".

The Brazilian airline Gol will be handling the service, he said, but advised Barbadians not to expect "droves of Brazilians" to come here immediately.

According to Sealy, Barbados was being careful in organising airline services from new destinations, since in the past some had disappeared "like a snowcone in the sun".

In the case of China, where former Prime Minister Sir Lloyd Sandiford has just been posted as ambassador, there would be no rush to have flights, he pointed out.

Government and the BTA would carefully do the homework on the market's tourism and business potential and make "a sensible decision" about how taxpayers' money would be spent, he said.

Sealy indicated that Barbados would use a major trade exhibition in China between May and October this year to monitor the China market and try to tap business opportunities.

Through the BTA, close to $2 million would be spent on that exhibit and activities, including promoting investment, he added.
