[Guyana] Search and Rescue operation launched as ASL plane goes missing
August 27, 2017

A search and rescue operation has been launched over the Region Eight area after a small plane, belonging to Air Services Limited, went missing on Sunday morning. The Cessna 206 aircraft was reportedly operating a flight between Chi-Chi and Mahdia in Region Eight and was expected to land at Mahdia around 8:47 this morning but was a no show. At around 9:08am, an emergency locator transmission from the plane was picked up and that was found to be about three miles north of Mahdia.

Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority, retired Colonel Egbert Field, confirmed to News Source that the Police and Military in the area were informed and a search effort is underway to locate the aircraft, based on the emergency locator transmission. He was cautious not to refer to the incident as a crash, since efforts are still underway to determine what exactly may have occurred and to locate the aircraft.

News Source understands that other airlines have already joined the search and rescue efforts and are flying out to the area to assist with searches from the air. It is unclear how many persons were on board the aircraft at the time of it being reported missing. It is also not clear what may have been the nature of the flight in the area.

Many miners work in the area and would transfer workers and supplies and food between the various Region Eight communities. Over the past month, there were two accidents involving small planes in the Eteringbang area. One of those accidents resulted in the death of a pilot, while the other left the pilot seriously injured. Investigations into both of those incidents are ongoing.

UPDATE: Accident site located. Troops being sent to wreckage.

The Air Services Limited aircraft, which went missing this morning, has been discovered near the Kaieteur Falls gorge and troops are currently on their way to the crash site. The fate of the pilot and the extent of the damages are unknown at this point.

The Cessna aircraft, bearing registration number 8R-GFM, sent off an ELT (emergency locator transmitter) signal just after 9:00hrs, a few miles from Mahdia. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has since launched OPERATION HAWK EYE, a search and rescue mission, to assist the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in locating an Air Services Limited CESSNA 206 aircraft.

The aircraft, piloted by ASL’s Captain Imran Khan, was en route from Chi Chi to Mahdia where it was expected to arrive at 08:47hrs.

Troops from the GDF 31 Special Forces Squadron are involved in the operation.

News Room will provide more details as it becomes available.
