Sunwing and St. Maarten Reach Agreement for Continued Service

St. Maarten's The Daily Herald is reporting that the government of St. Maarten has reached an agreement with Sunwing to ensure the continuation of Sunwing’s 4X weekly flights to the Dutch Caribbean island. The goal of the agreement, a matching cooperative marketing plan, is to generate greater awareness about St. Maarten and ultimately stimulate travel to the island.

“The continuation of our partnership depended a lot on parties meeting each other at a mutually beneficial point where St. Maarten could secure the airlift under a financially feasible arrangement.” said Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher, Sint Maarten’s Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs. “Sunwing in turn would get a little more support in terms of media and marketing support for the flights.” the Minister explained in the press statement.

The proposal between Sunwing and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau, commits $325.000 US (approx. $430,000 CA) to be paid in increments spread over an 18-month period in 2017 and 2018, with Sunwing matching that amount.

Sunwing currently operates four weekly flights to St. Maarten (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday), with the goal of reinstating a fifth flight dropped last year.

Excluding same-day cruise ship passengers, over 57,000 Canadians visited St. Maarten in 2016, with Sunwing accounting for 28,347 travellers or approximately 50 per cent of those Canadian visitors.

In addition to Sunwing, St. Maarten is served out of Canada by Air Canada, Air Transat, and WestJet.
