BVI Airways, Ports Audit, Recovery Board; We need answers- Hon Fahie
- Opposition Leader to pepper Premier with Questions @ March 1, 2018 HoA sitting
February 27th, 2018

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI

It was our newsroom, on February 19, 2018 that first and accurately reported that the House of Assembly (HoA) will be meeting on March 1, 2018 and will be returning to the Parliament building in Road Town.

It will also be a day to hear the Speech from the Throne, a colonial and Westminster system of government practice.

Another highlight on the Order Paper is questions from the Opposition Leader Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) to the Premier and Leader of Government Business.

Hon Fahie, the fiery Leader and Chairman of the main Opposition Virgin Islands Party, and others say the 'Premier in waiting', will be asking a variety of questions from BVI Airways, the Ports Audit and the controversial Recovery Board.

Questions on BVI Airways

Hon Fahie is to ask Dr Smith to provide an update “in full detail on what measure(s) have been taken by the government to recover the over seven million dollars paid out to BVI Airways for the airline agreement between them and the Government of the Virgin Islands.”

The public will recall that the National Democratic Party (NDP) Government gave away tax payers money to the tune of $7.2 Million to a bankrupt airline with a promise of direct flights between Miami International Airport in Florida, USA and the Terrence B. Lettome International Airport on Beef Island.

Two years later, the airline is yet to take flight.

Over $40M over run on Ports Project; No one held to account

In addition, the Leader of the Opposition is to ask the Premier and Minister of Finance to inform the public on the current status of the Cruise Pier Port Development Project investigation, with the on-going forensic audit.

It was three years ago that the former governor, John S. Duncan OBE refused to conduct a commission of inquired into the ports project even after reports showed there was conflict of interest and lack of value for money.

However, the Smith Administration announced in 2016 that it was conducting their own audit. To date the report is not forthcoming.

Who is on your Recovery Board Mr Premier?

Another of the many questions to be asked by Hon Fahie is about the controversial Recovery Board that many consider a parallel government. It’s to control all funds for the post hurricanes recovery process because the United Kingdom Government has no trust or faith in the NDP to manage the money.

Mr Fahie will ask: “Madam Speaker, could the Premier and Minister of Finance please inform this Honourable House, if there exist or existed an interim Recovery/Development Agency Board or Committee or working group?
  • i) If the answer is yes to any of the above, then please inform which one(s) were approved by Cabinet and if not, then state who approved its formation?
ii) State who approved the composition of each or all?
iii) State who approved the Terms of Reference of each or all?
iv) Who approved the composition of each or all and state the Terms of Reference for each and the Membership of each?”
The HoA is to be aired live on CBN Radio Station 90.9 FM from 10:00 AM on Thursday March 1, 2018.
