Lufthansa cancels flights ahead of strike

Lufthansa has cancelled 876 of its approximately 3,000 scheduled flights on Wednesday ahead of a strike that has been called by its pilots' union.

Fifty-one long-haul routes, including some intercontinental service, are among the canceled flights. Approximately 100,000 passengers will be impacted. The German carrier says that passengers should verify the status of their flight at LH.com. Those whose flights are canceled can rebook for free or receive a refund.

In a statement Tuesday, the carrier didn't say which U.S. flights would be canceled Wednesday. However, it said that flights are planned from Frankfurt to Chicago, Houston, Miami and Washington Dulles. Flights will also operate from Munich to San Francisco, Newark and Charlotte.

Wednesday's strike will be the 14th over 2-and-a-half years in the long-running dispute between Lufthansa and the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit.
