[Barbados, REDjet] $8m plea
DAWNE PARRIS
SUN, JUNE 10, 2012

A DAY AFTER REDjet announced it was filing for bankruptcy, details emerged of a last-ditch appeal made to Government in May to save the Barbadian-based, low-cost carrier from going under.

In a letter to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, executive group chairman Ian Burns pressed for payment of $8 million which, he said, had been solemnly promised at a January 14 meeting attended by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, Minister of International Transport George Hutson and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Senator Darcy Boyce.

In the May 21 correspondence to Stuart, Burns also formally requested payment by May 31 of the funds, which were expected through the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA).

“A letter dated 25th January, 2012 caveated this solemn promise made under handshake with [the] Minister of Finance and [former REDjet director] Bizzy Williams, stating it was subject to Cabinet approval. By the 16th March, 2012 no approval had been sought. To this day, we do not have a signed agreement,” Burns complained.

More say-anything, do-nothing from this government in Barbados, led by the leading do-nothing default Prime Minister himself. Did those politicians really believe nobody else would get to hear about this?

Is PM Stuart really standing back from leading the country because he was not elected? Or is he refusing to make decisions because of the principle of "tort" - if you don't pro-actively do something in a particular area you cannot be blamed for that area's failure??

This is the first time I have ever seen a political party rule by "default" - but I guess Stuart was the "default" for that post when Thompson died, and he's just carrying on the tradition.

Mr. Prime Minister, Sir!!! With all due respect, we want to see you make decisions!! Lead by example, or the rest of the Ministers and Civil Service in Barbados will follow suit!! Your Cabinet Minister George Hutson is already following your example and managing his Ministries by default!!

Alternatively, call an election and get off the pot!!

The election has been called!

(ok, not officially, but every time you see a wholesale effort to fix roads in areas where a politician does not live, it signals an election is near)
