April 19, 2016

Travellers at Bristol Airport will soon be able to fly to far-flung exotic locations direct from the West Country.

The airport will be announcing today that it has signed a deal with Thomson and its First Choice brand that will open up the airport to a host of new destinations which are expected to include Florida and the Caribbean.

Top destinations you can fly to from Bristol Airport this summer

Bristol has one of the fastest growing airports in the country and last year a record 6.7 million passengers passed through its terminal.

Most destinations from the airport are short-haul with the bigger planes such as the Boeing 747 not able to use the runway.

But the latest generation of planes - which are designed and built to fly further on less fuel mean that the airport will be able to offer more exotic destinations.

Boeing's brand new plane - the Dreamliner 787 - will be arriving at the Bristol for the first time ever tomorrow.

The arrival of the plane will herald the start of the next phase of development at the airport.

The airport is in the midst of an expansion programme with the aim of increasing passenger numbers to 10 million.

In order to reach its target the airport will have to offer new destinations to attract the extra passengers.

As reported in the Bristol Post the airport is increasing the size of its terminal, creating a new public transport terminal and has also announced that a new hotel is to open for business.

When the new hotel was opened its importance was underline by the airport's boss Robert Sinclair.

He said: "The development of a high quality on-site hotel to be operated under such a world-renowned brand will be a very welcome addition to our facilities for the growing number of passengers choosing to fly to and from Bristol Airport.

"Alongside the terminal extension currently under construction, this is another statement of our ambition to be a world class regional airport serving the South West of the UK."

Bristol Airport is expected announce a deal with Thomson and First Choice Holidays this morning at a launch special event.

The deal will result in direct long haul routes for Thomson and First Choice customers from Bristol Airport from next summer.

The destinations are thought to include Florida and the Caribbean.

Through its First Choice brand Thomson flies over six million customers each year to over 80 destinations worldwide from 23 UK airports.

First Choice currently offer package holidays in Jamaica, Cuba and Mexico.

The last direct flights across the Atlantic from Bristol were to New York.

They were scrapped six years ago when the Continental Airline pulled out of the airport due to lack of passenger demand.

At the moment the furthest destinations from the airport include Tunisia, Morocco and Cape Verde. The firm also flies to Barbados and to the Dominican Republic.
