[Barbados] Air traffic controllers receiving money
Emmanuel Joseph
January 6, 2015.

Air traffic controllers who went on strike two months ago to protest poor conditions, staffing shortages, and outstanding pay, have started getting some of their money.

While he could not provide a figure, Acting Assistant General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) Dwaine Paul told Barbados TODAY that the money received so far covered acting allowances and salaries.

Paul said the remainder of the compensation was still being worked out with the Ministry of International Transport.

“At present we are working with ministry officials to look at issues relating to compensation and staffing. Especially with staffing, we should, by the beginning of next month, . . . begin training of new controllers,” he said in an interview this afternoon.

Even though the exact numbers were still to be finalized, the union official said about 10 people were expected to be in that first batch of trainees.

When the air traffic controllers at the Grantley Adams International Airport walked off the job last November, they were demanding better working conditions, including improvements to the air conditioning.

Paul reported today that work still has to be done inside the control tower but there has been significant improvement.

“For now, they are still doing some work in terms of getting the required [sun] shades set up and installed. So we still have some stuff there to do,” he said.
