[TCI] Take airport deal to court, says governor
February 27, 2012

According to sources close to the interim government, Governor Ric Todd has advised entrepreneurs Shaun Malcolm and Joshua Harvey to retain legal counsel if they feel they have been unfairly treated by chief executive officer of the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA), John Smith.

Sky Cruise Airlines and Sky Blue, a fixed base operator, have reportedly yet to substantiate their claimed agreement with former Governor Gordon Wetherell for a 99-year lease of 45 acres at the Providenciales International Airport. In a recent meeting with Smith they were said to be surprised to learn that certain members of the TCIAA have now apparently backed away from the deal.

It is not known if the claimed agreement with Wetherell was documented. When Sky Cruise applied for its airline licence it was challenged by the CEO and owner of Turks and Caicos Airways, Lyndon Gardiner, the nephew of former premier Michael Misick. However, after an unusually long delay the licence was granted.

The fixed base operations (FBO) situation is now in question and chair of the Consultative Forum, Lillian Misick, had earlier agreed to provide a public venue for the facts of the matter to be determined. However, Governor Todd subsequently told Missick not to get involved in the dispute.

Other sources have indicated separately that a close relative of a member of the TCIAA now wants to set up a FBO. While both the member and the relative have been identified, this report has yet to be confirmed.
