Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to offer flights from BWI-Marshall Airport to the French Caribbean by the end of the year, adding to the number of international destinations available from the airport.

The European low-cost airline, based in Oslo, will launch twice-weekly nonstop service from Baltimore to Guadeloupe and Martinique islands in the West Indies beginning Dec. 3.

The flights to Guadeloupe will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while flights to Martinique will operate on Mondays and Fridays. The airline said it will use Norwegian's new 737-800 aircraft and include free Wi-Fi. The planes hold 186 passengers and are eco-friendly, according to Norwegian.

Introductory fares will start at $79 one-way from U.S. airports, including Baltimore, New York and Boston. The airline is a new entry to the Baltimore and Boston markets but offers routes from the U.S. to London and Scandinavia at other airports.

BWI has long said its goal is to grow international traffic at the airport. For the first quarter of 2015, international passengers grew by more than 22 percent, according to the Maryland Aviation Administration.

Including Norwegian, BWI has added three new international airlines in 2015.

In an interview with Reuters, Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said expanding service to Europe from Baltimore is "definitely" on the airline's to-do list.

Kjos, along with airport officials, will announce more details of the new service later today at BWI.
