AIR JAMAICA'S CANCELLATION of its direct flight between Jamaica and Barbados is not a major cause for concern.

Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy said it was a setback but plans were already in place to counteract any possible fallout.

"We're doing a number of things to woo more business and will be doing some programmes with LIAT to get more regional business here.

"It is a setback in terms of seats between Kingston and Barbados but . . . [we are] not so worried because of the relationships we are building with CAL (Caribbean Airlines – formerly BWIA) and LIAT," he said after the Ministry of Tourism's Christmas Postcard Competition 2008 awards ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St Michael, last Friday.

Regional business

He added that Barbados was taking those relationships "to another level" which was why he thought the island's regional business would not be "desperately hurt".

Sealy said he appreciated the airline's concerns as he heard it was recording losses upwards of $165 million, but said Government was looking at other options.

The service will be terminated February 26, which leaves Caribbean Airlines as the lone airline offering service between Barbados and Jamaica. The airline has also cut flights between Grenada and Jamaica, as well as service to Miami, the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles and Atlanta in the United States.

Reports out of Jamaica stated about 600 jobs would be lost overall, but chief executive officer Bruce Nobles said the company had yet to figure out the exact number of people who would be affected.
