Antigua St John's

American Airlines is reportedly planning to sever its American Eagle subsidiary flights out of Puerto Rico next year.

The airline has not confirmed or denied this move, but a Puerto Rican newspaper, El Vocero, said the Association of Flight Attendants had sent a memo to American Eagle's 150 employees last Friday.

According to the newspaper, AA's bankruptcy restructuring calls for cutting US$75 M per year in labour costs.

American Eagle services 15 destinations, mainly in the Greater and Lesser Antilles.

Daphne Barbeito, president of the American Association of Travel Agents (ASTA), was quoted as saying, "This news has a direct impact on two areas. The part of us as an industry we will not have a flexible and convenient air access to offer our packages to other Caribbean destinations. It is an access problem to generate business for travel agents."
