American Eagle, the regional-flying subsidiary of American Airlines, said Thursday that traffic in May rose 5.8 percent, joining a group of carriers that saw better traffic this spring than last.

Eagle said paying passengers flew 728.9 million miles last month, up from 689 million in May 2009. The figures include Eagle's affiliate in the Caribbean and Florida, Executive Airlines, which saw an 11 percent drop in traffic.

Eagle increased capacity by 4.9 percent, to 984.4 million available seat miles, a measure of one seat flown one mile. Airlines usually boost capacity by adding flights.

Average occupancy on planes rose 0.6 points to 74 percent.

Shares of parent AMR Corp. rose 8 cents to close at $8.28.
