Airline cuts to cost 229 jobs in PR

Nearly 230 local jobs will be lost under previously announced plans by American Airlines and American Eagle to reduce their Puerto Rico service next week by a combined 14 flights.

American Airlines (AA) will cut eight flights and American Eagle will drop five under the service reductions slated to take effect next Tuesday.

As of that date, AA and American Eagle will employ 946 people at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, which is 229 less than in September 2010, an American Airlines official told CARIBBEAN BUSINESS.

“We regret that these changes will affect AA and Eagle employees in San Juan,” said Martha Pantín, director of corporate communications for Miami, Caribbean, Latin America and U.S. Hispanic markets. “All employees have the opportunity to transfer to other locations in the system.”

The majority of the 229 employees whose jobs will be eliminated in Puerto Rico have opted for relocation, said Pantín, noting that outright layoffs will be fewer than 40.

“Many employees have already sought transfers, so the number of employees to be affected by layoffs is 24 for American,” she said. “These employees will be able to transfer to other stations in the system.”

At American Eagle, 14 employees did not accept transfers and will receive layoff notices.

As of next week, AA will offer 16 flights. In June, that number will increase to 18 with the addition of an eighth daily flight to Miami (MIA) and a fourth daily flight to New York (JFK).

American Eagle will offer 28 daily flights (peak days).

The combined network will operate 44 daily departures from San Juan, more than any other airline.

AA will discontinue service from San Juan to six destinations: Boston (BOS), Baltimore (BWI), Philadelphia (PHL), Tampa, Fla. (TPA) Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Santo Domingo (SDQ). AA will continue to serve its five cornerstone markets as well as Hartford, Conn. (BDL), and Caracas (CCS).

American Eagle will discontinue direct service from San Juan to six destinations: Anguilla (AXA), Barbados (BGI) La Romana (LRM) and Puerto Plata, D.R. (POP), Port-au-Prince, Haiti (PAP) and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (POS).
