Cape Air, pilots reach tentative contract agreement

Cape Air and its pilots have reached a tentative four-year contract agreement, the first union contract to cover any of the airline’s employees.

The pilots are part of the airline division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which spent nearly two years negotiating the contract. The agreement covers pay, yearly raises, schedules, and seniority for the 160 pilots who fly for Cape Air out of the United States, the Caribbean, and Micronesia.

After the pilots vote on the contract in late February, the contract is expected to be in place by March 1.

“I think the beneficial aspect is that it codifies what we had done in practice,” said Dave Bushy, president of Cape Air, noting that the company has grown from a $50 million company five years ago to a $100 million company with 950 employees. “It’s not changing the way we do business, but it was I think a very good process to sit down and say, hey, how does it really work?”

Hyannis-based Cape Air, which also does business as Nantucket Airlines, flies nine-seat planes to 39 destinations and has as many as 700 flights a day systemwide in the summer.
