Cape Air pilots accepted a four-year union contract this week, the airline announced Thursday.

The Hyannis-based airline and the Teamsters union reached a tentative agreement Jan. 20 on the contract, the first ever for the pilots.

A series of meetings took place throughout February, so various groups of pilots could vote on the agreement. The ballots were counted this week, the airline announced.

Cape Air has 160 full-time pilots in the Northeast, Midwest, Florida, the Caribbean and Micronesia.

The agreement will be effective through March 2016.

It covered issues related to pay scale, "seniority protection" for pilots, a 401(k) match, and short and long term disability.

The negotiations, lasting less then two years, took place in Hyannis.

"We never went to mediation, which was a testimony of everyone getting resolution on the issues," airline President Dave Bushy said.

"It's the culmination of many days and hours of hard work by our pilot negotiating committee and the "ยป (union) representatives who worked side by side with us," said Marilyn Rhude, the executive council chairwoman for Teamsters Local 1224, which represents Cape Air pilots.

The airline's pilots voted in January 2010 to rejoin the Teamsters after the pilots formed their own union for a stint. Before the May 2009 vote to form the in-house union, the pilots had been represented by the Teamsters since 2006.

An investigation by the National Mediation Board concluded in November 2009 that Cape Air CEO Dan Wolf compromised an election earlier in the year by endorsing the Cape Air Pilots Association over the Teamsters.
