[Guyana] Government allows Conviasa single flight to take stranded passengers out
June 8, 2015

The Guyana Government has granted permission for Venezuelan flag carrier, Conviasa Airlines to make a single flight to Guyana to pick up stranded Venezuelan passengers.

The passengers were left stranded at the Cheddi Jagan Airport following the decision of the government to suspend the airline’s service to Guyana because of its non-payment of a bond to the government.

The airline also owed landing and administration fees to the Cheddi Jagan Airport and the Civil Aviation Authority, but quickly settled that bill. It is still to lodge the bond.

The Government of Guyana has indicated that it is standard procedure that airlines operating out of Guyana lodge a bond in case there is a need to cater for passengers affected by issues which may negatively affect their flights in and out of the country.

Conviasa reportedly never paid the bond under the previous PPP Civic administration although it has been operating weekly flights between Guyana and Venezuela since 2013.
