Surinam Airways wants to ‘free up’ more space for Guyanese
August 25, 2016

General Manager of Surinam Airways Henk Fitz-Jim has revealed that the airline approached the Government of Guyana to have some of its flights to originate from Guyana thus making more seats available for Guyanese passengers.

A release from the company noted that next week the airline will begin a non-stop flight from Suriname to Miami thus immediately “freeing up” more seats to Guyanese passengers on its service to Miami and Orlando out of Guyana.

According to the release, should the airline be granted permission to have flights originate in Guyana, more jobs will be created for Guyanese crew and support staff.

The General Manager noted that during Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations last May, many passengers from Georgia expressed the hope that Surinam Airways would fly to Atlanta directly from Guyana.

“We are reaching out to the Guyanese community there to assess its real level of interest and to look at that market, study it some more with a view to determining the needs and the feasibility of meeting those needs,” Fitz-Jim is quoted as saying in the release.

The airline also recently re-introduced its seasonal weekly nonstop flight to Orlando, Florida; last May introduced a third weekly non-stop flight to Miami and is currently looking at the feasibility of a fourth weekly flight.

Meanwhile, Surinam Airways will be hosting an Outreach Reception at the Holy Cross Episcopal Royall Hall in Decatur, for the Guyanese American community residing in Georgia.

The release noted this outreach will seek to survey the interest of the Guyanese Americans in having the airline serve that market directly from Guyana in the future. Henk Fitz-Jim said this initiative is being undertaken in response to the desire expressed by some Guyanese in Georgia as well as Guyanese organizations including the Guyanese American Chamber of Commerce (GACC).
