[Caribbean] American Eagle Says Adios
Tuesday, 02 April 2013

Antigua St. John's

The last American Eagle flight in the Caribbean flew into San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday night from the British Virgin Islands. This brought to a close almost 27 years of service between those islands.

The last flight, 4795, carried about 80 passengers who were photographed by staff while fire engines sprayed water in tribute.

According to recent news reports, some of the flight crew members in Tortola will transition to Seaborne Airlines, which will take over several Eagle routes. Other American staffers will be transferred to US airports.

However, at least half of the ground staff in Puerto Rico is to be laid off, according to reports. Others have plans to retire or will be transferred.

American Airlines announced last year that it would pull the plug on regional services. The US carrier will be combining with US Airways after winning federal court approval.

American Eagle, American Airlines, and parent company AMR Corp filed for bankruptcy in November 2011.
