Eastern Airlines applies to start scheduled int'l ops
31.12.2019

Eastern Airlines (2D, Miami Int'l) has applied for authority to start scheduled international passenger operations with the US Department for Transportation, as it seeks to add flights to any countries with which the US has an open skies agreement. Its application states that it is interested in flying to destinations in Mexico in addition to its existing approvals to fly to Guyana and Ecuador.

The airline suggests that giving it access to these markets "is consistent with the public interest and will promote much-needed competition by facilitating a new entrant in international markets." Responses supporting or opposing Eastern's most recent application are set to be received by the US DOT by January 8, 2020.

Eastern already holds a certificate of public convenience and necessity to operate between New York JFK and Georgetown Cheddi Jagan and it has exemption authority to operate between JFK and Guayaquil. Both of these routes will be flown under a low-fare business model as scheduled flights from Spring 2020, according to the application. The carrier expects to fly to Georgetown 3x weekly and to Guayaquil 2x weekly.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the airline currently operates one B767-200, three -200(ER)s, five -300(ER)s, and one B777-200(ER). Of these, one of the -300(ER)s N953KW (msn 24953) and the B777-200(ER) N783KW (msn 33683) have been inactive recently.
